How gay sex changed the world – (BBC, UK, 2007)

BRITAIN has become a much pinker place since the first Gay Pride march in 1972.

R-WalkWithPride-Opening-04-Copyright-European-UnionpeterIF you’re the sort of person who was shocked by Julian Clary’s joke about what he’d been up to backstage at the Comedy Awards with Norman Lamont, the title of this documentary should be a warning that it’s time to go to bed with a mug of cocoa and a puzzle book.

Forty years after gay sex was decriminalised in Britain (providing it was in private, you were over 21 and you didn’t make a song and dance about it), contributors including David Furnish, Matthew Parris and Chris Smith recall how Britain has become a much pinker place since the first Gay Pride march in 1972 when, as actor Simon Callow recalls: „There were 30 or 40 of us straggling down Oxford Street waving pink flags.”

As a trawl through four decades of growing gay acceptance and equality, nothing here is exactly newsworthy. But seeing the way TV has presented gay characters over the years, from the campness of Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served to the sweaty reality of Queer As Folk, says it all.
